Well, I had my interview. Best part was that I got paid for it using a PTO day from work. I'm not to thrilled about the interview or the job. What they told me is that it is 30 - 35 hours a week at $9.50 an hour. That is full time and comes out to just less than $15,000 a year. Living in L.A. that is not enough to cover living expenses, and not even enough to cover my student loan payments. I don't mean to come off as prideful or ignorant, I know that my first full-time media job will not pay very much, probably not even that much. But this is a Promotions job, as such there are no set schedules. I would have difficulty securing a second job to make up the difference due to the irregularity of radio promotions.
Also, just as I predicted, they had not read my Cover Letter or Resume. And then they were kind of put off when I told them I am in Arizona and would not be able to start until after I graduated in December. Why do I bother sending you information if you aren't going to use it when deciding to bring me in?
And thirdly, it is a CBS owned station, and they aren't a very good company to work for, that's what the rumor amongst media professionals is anyway. I would rather work for Bonneville or Clear Channel. I did find out that the Bonneville station in the Los Angeles market does not really do promotions very much because they are "all about the music". They don't even "waste time" with on air giveaways. That would explain why they never scheduled an interview with me, but I suspect that this is a recent cost-saving development. Because that station is built to have a brilliant street team. But if you have to cut back then for some reason Promotions always seems to get the axe first.
Anyway, I didn't get the job, but I didn't not get it either. They said that they would call to schedule a second interview next week when the Promotions manager was back in town and they could schedule with him for interviews as well. I think they think I can keep driving out there repeatedly. I'm gonna ask them if we can do a phone interview for the second one. I'm not all that interested in the job anymore, and I am questioning my decision to move to L.A. Perhaps I should follow-up more with those stations in Pocatello, ID?
It did sound fun though to do the guerrilla marketing that they told me about. They said they would send me to a high school and have me hand out stickers until I get kicked off campus. That sounds fun!
But yet, there is obviously more to come!
