Making Contacts in Radio

Ok! Some good stuff has happened this week! Well Thursday anyway. I woke up to my phone ringing at 8:00 in the morning. It was Don Craig from KPKY 94.9 The Rock in Pocatello, ID. I know, it isn't in L.A. But a couple of weeks ago I considered Idaho for a bit and made some phone calls and sent some e-mails. No one had anything available then, and they couldn't see anything opening up by January. Well, as often happens, things change. Don called me to tell me that the country music station that his employer, Gapwest Broadcasting, owns in Pocatello will be having an opening in about a month. We spoke a bit about the operations of the station he works at, and we laughed a bit about the industry in general. He then put me in contact with the Operations manager for KID 96.1 The Bull.

This is important. I was able to make a good contact with someone, and he called me to let me know about an opening that would be coming up. I find this to be important! He didn't have to, they could have just posted the opening on their website, it isn't even at his station! Still don't know what will come of this, or if it will even work out, they might decide that they need to fill the position before January. But he might call me again if something else comes up. He's a great guy, at least that's my impression of him. And I would love to be able to work with him. Pocatello would be a good market to get into as well I think.

Anyway, as I was composing my email to the Ops Manager of The Bull, I recieved a call from AMP Radio in LA! She actually scheduled an interview with me too! I will be driving over after my classes on Wednesday the 14th, and have my interview on Thursday the 15th at 2:30 pm. I am incredibly excited! I just hope that my time off request from 15 gets approved, otherwise I might not be able to go. I only need that Thursday off, I'll be back for work on Friday. The interview is for a Promotions position, which I really want. Probably part-time, but definately room for growth into a full-time position. I don't think I'll get the job. I made it quite clear that I'm not available to start until after I graduate in December, but I don't think she quite got it. Sometimes I wonder if these employers actually READ the cover letters I send with my resume.

None-the-less, I have a reason to go to LA for a coule days and my buddy Nathan is really excited to have me coming over again. It's gonna be good times! What's more, when I told him about the interview we looked up where it's at. Looks like, since I'd be living at his place, I would have the privilege of driving down the PCH everyday to get to work. I love the beach. I love cruising the coast. And I LOVE spotting really expensive European cars as I drive down that highway from Malibu to Venice!
