It's been awhile...

There, now I have moved the content of my Wordpress blog over to this one. I like Wordpress better, but that was hosted by ASU and I'm not sure they will leave it up for me to use. An update, I was rejected for the KNIX job. The manager for KYOT liked me fine, but the KNIX manager rejected me before he even talked to me.

Maybe Getting a Job in the Phoenix Market After All!

Originally posted on The Sound of Fury blog October 26, 2009:

Well a major breakthrough has come! One of my co-workers at ABC15 told me a couple of weeks ago that his wife, who was the Promotions Manager for 102.5 KNIX at Clear Channel Radio here in Phoenix, was thinking about quiting her job. This was exciting news, but I didn't do anything with it at the time. I remembered her from when I worked there and decided that I would not get my hopes up for her to quit.

Well, last Friday, she put in her two weeks notice. I'm stoked! I was told by my old manager at KMXP Mix 96.9 that she had put in her notice. When her husband had the chance to tell me, I already knew. He was sort of blown away by that. He thought it was funny that I already knew. It's a small world really. I feel kind of bad about trying to leave ABC15, especially since I am starting to fall in nicely with the crew. But managing radio promotions is what I want to do. And here I have a chance to get the job I want and not have to leave Phoenix. I still do want to leave Phoenix, but I don't want to either. It's a real conundrum I'm in. But I applied for the job of course. I mailed a resume later that day.

I'm kind of confident that I can get it, as long as they don't mind my class schedule. But they know me and love me over there. Even Vicki Fiorelli knows me by name, and on one occasion told a Clear Channel Program Director not to worry about the remote broadcast we were on because I was working the control and everything would go fine. really the only thing I have working against me is my 3 days of unavailability. But we should be able to work around it until I graduate in December. It's only another 6 weeks. Really I'm blown away that this opportunity came up.

I had been called in a couple weeks ago by Program Manager Smokey Rivers. He wanted me to board-op (watch the broadcast from inside the studio and make sure all the legal FCC stuff happens) two days a week. Unfortunately I did not have the time free during the shift that he wanted me for. And I do not have the freedom to rearrange my schedule to open the time up. I was sad that I had to turn the job down, but for the pay that job would give I would not have been able to afford to quit 15. If I get this job then I will be able to quit. I would be making more money than I am now. I would be making enough money to call this my job after I graduate. I think this is important. I'm kind of in a position now that if I can't get on full-time at 15 after I graduate then I'm gonna have to get another job that pays more. And that might mean quitting 15 if I have to. I simply am going to need more money, student loan payments don't pay themselves, and what I'm getting now is not enough to even cover those. Not to mention my other bills that I am already paying. This is also why I had to turn down the job at Amp in L.A.

On Saturday my co-worker's wife came to 15 after she got off. She had been working an event at the fair. She came to see him. And we finally saw each other, and she remembered who I was. I am going to their halloween party this Saturday, and I'm sure that by now she knows I sent a resume for the job. He's hoping I can take over running audio for him here pretty soon because he hates it. And I am starting to make friends with the production crew. I would feel bad to leave them behind, but I gotta think about good 'ol number 1 too. This is my career and I don't want to miss out on it. My chance is here and now.

As much as I want to build my experience the old-fashioned way, I might not have too!

Look for a Job in a Smaller Market and have Better Luck

I have done a bit of soul searching. I feel now like maybe Los Angeles would not be quite a good idea yet. But I think it was still a good experience going to interview over there. I still would like to work in that market. But it looks like I will have to do it the old-fashioned way and get a few years under my belt in a smaller market first. This will give me the ability to to move quickly through a station and gain a lot more experience through a lot more responsibility. I will probably end up on air. All the stations I have looked into, except the ones in Las Vegas (I thought it would be fun to try there too), have a small staff, and everyone does a bit of on-air work. This is better for me really I suppose. The markets I will look into are Pocatello/Idaho Falls, ID; Tucson, AZ; Kingman, AZ; Flagstaff, AZ; and for fun Las Vegas, NV.

I have already sent resumes to every station in Flagstaff around six months ago. But it couldn't hurt to send them more. They never called me back as it is. Maybe things might have changed. Maybe my first one was missplaced. They have new openings listed, but no one has called me so I will inundate them with paper until I get that call.

As I mentioned before, I already have spoken with someone from Pocatello, but I have not been able to contact them since. As I investigated this just now I came to realize that Pocatello and Idaho falls fall into the same broadcast market because they are so close to each other that the signals carry. The gapwest Broadcasting company has offices in both cities and they broadcast from both cities. I will send them both resumes, and since I spoke with them a couple weeks ago I know who to address the envelopes to. :)

I've investigated Tucson several times before. Once I even was called to interview for an on-air position that I had applied for. The problem was that I would be starting ASU a month later and I had applied to the job six months prior to that day. I would have dropped and taken the job, but I decided a degree would be more important than a job at the time. It had the potential to take me farther. And anyway, I had already paid my tuition and it was past the refund date. But that really opened my eyes to smaller markets and how much more likely they are to hire anyone instead being experience snobs.

Kingman is a TINY market, but all the same it has a couple of stations in it. It shares a lot of airwaves with Las Vegas as well. I don't know if this will have any bearing on the stations hiring decisions. The websites I looked at were pretty low budget. They weren't even as sofisticated as this Wordpress blog. But maybe right? Maybe I don't fit with the Kingman demographic, we will see!

As I said above, I will send to stations in Las Vegas purely for the fun of it. Maybe I get a job there, maybe I don't, wouldn't bother me either way. And think how much fun I would have during the day before and after my interview!

Anyway, I see this as a learning experience all the way around. I really felt like moving to Los Angeles would be the right thing for me to do. But after driving over there and going through the interview, I'm thinking that it isn't now. The whole experience just felt really wrong. And in the end I would have a job that wouldn't even cover my cost of living in that city.

Hoping for the best! I'll post more when I hear back from anyone I send a resume to!

Result of my Interview at AMP Radio

Originally posted on The Sound of Fury blog October 17, 2009:

Well, I had my interview. Best part was that I got paid for it using a PTO day from work. I'm not to thrilled about the interview or the job. What they told me is that it is 30 - 35 hours a week at $9.50 an hour. That is full time and comes out to just less than $15,000 a year. Living in L.A. that is not enough to cover living expenses, and not even enough to cover my student loan payments. I don't mean to come off as prideful or ignorant, I know that my first full-time media job will not pay very much, probably not even that much. But this is a Promotions job, as such there are no set schedules. I would have difficulty securing a second job to make up the difference due to the irregularity of radio promotions.

Also, just as I predicted, they had not read my Cover Letter or Resume. And then they were kind of put off when I told them I am in Arizona and would not be able to start until after I graduated in December. Why do I bother sending you information if you aren't going to use it when deciding to bring me in?

And thirdly, it is a CBS owned station, and they aren't a very good company to work for, that's what the rumor amongst media professionals is anyway. I would rather work for Bonneville or Clear Channel. I did find out that the Bonneville station in the Los Angeles market does not really do promotions very much because they are "all about the music". They don't even "waste time" with on air giveaways. That would explain why they never scheduled an interview with me, but I suspect that this is a recent cost-saving development. Because that station is built to have a brilliant street team. But if you have to cut back then for some reason Promotions always seems to get the axe first.

Anyway, I didn't get the job, but I didn't not get it either. They said that they would call to schedule a second interview next week when the Promotions manager was back in town and they could schedule with him for interviews as well. I think they think I can keep driving out there repeatedly. I'm gonna ask them if we can do a phone interview for the second one. I'm not all that interested in the job anymore, and I am questioning my decision to move to L.A. Perhaps I should follow-up more with those stations in Pocatello, ID?

It did sound fun though to do the guerrilla marketing that they told me about. They said they would send me to a high school and have me hand out stickers until I get kicked off campus. That sounds fun!

But yet, there is obviously more to come!

Job Interview Plans for Next Week

Originally posted on The Sound of Fury blog October 10, 2009:

This will be brief. I have an interview at 97.1 AMP Radio next Thursday. My time-off request from ABC 15 was approved. So after class on Wednesday I will be heading over to Los Angeles. I will spend the night at my friend's apartment in Agoura Hills. And go to my interview at 2:30 pm the next day. I have reserved a camera from the equipment room and I have permission to take it with me and return it Friday night. I will be documenting my trip the best that I can. Obviously I won't be able to take the camera into the interview with me, but I can talk about it. The cool thing about that market is that even radio stations employ videographers to shoot content for their webpages. I hope I make a good impression on them. I need to be back to work at 15 at 2:15 on Friday. Friday is gonna be a long day :(.

Making Contacts in Radio

Ok! Some good stuff has happened this week! Well Thursday anyway. I woke up to my phone ringing at 8:00 in the morning. It was Don Craig from KPKY 94.9 The Rock in Pocatello, ID. I know, it isn't in L.A. But a couple of weeks ago I considered Idaho for a bit and made some phone calls and sent some e-mails. No one had anything available then, and they couldn't see anything opening up by January. Well, as often happens, things change. Don called me to tell me that the country music station that his employer, Gapwest Broadcasting, owns in Pocatello will be having an opening in about a month. We spoke a bit about the operations of the station he works at, and we laughed a bit about the industry in general. He then put me in contact with the Operations manager for KID 96.1 The Bull.

This is important. I was able to make a good contact with someone, and he called me to let me know about an opening that would be coming up. I find this to be important! He didn't have to, they could have just posted the opening on their website, it isn't even at his station! Still don't know what will come of this, or if it will even work out, they might decide that they need to fill the position before January. But he might call me again if something else comes up. He's a great guy, at least that's my impression of him. And I would love to be able to work with him. Pocatello would be a good market to get into as well I think.

Anyway, as I was composing my email to the Ops Manager of The Bull, I recieved a call from AMP Radio in LA! She actually scheduled an interview with me too! I will be driving over after my classes on Wednesday the 14th, and have my interview on Thursday the 15th at 2:30 pm. I am incredibly excited! I just hope that my time off request from 15 gets approved, otherwise I might not be able to go. I only need that Thursday off, I'll be back for work on Friday. The interview is for a Promotions position, which I really want. Probably part-time, but definately room for growth into a full-time position. I don't think I'll get the job. I made it quite clear that I'm not available to start until after I graduate in December, but I don't think she quite got it. Sometimes I wonder if these employers actually READ the cover letters I send with my resume.

None-the-less, I have a reason to go to LA for a coule days and my buddy Nathan is really excited to have me coming over again. It's gonna be good times! What's more, when I told him about the interview we looked up where it's at. Looks like, since I'd be living at his place, I would have the privilege of driving down the PCH everyday to get to work. I love the beach. I love cruising the coast. And I LOVE spotting really expensive European cars as I drive down that highway from Malibu to Venice!

Locating Radio Stations AND College Football

Originally on The Sound of Fury blog September 19, 2009:

I am sitting at work at ABC15 where I work as a studio slave and I am watching football. The next show isn't until ten, so I may as well update my blog while I am here.

I do enjoy watching College football, BYU got rocked by Florida State today which was sad, it was BYU's first home field loss in something like 6 years. I am currently watching the Texas/Texas Tech game. Not as close as I had hoped it would be, but it still could be anyone's game. And the ASU game is on FSArizona. The thing about ASU's non-conference schedule is that the teams they play are sorry, pathetic excuses of school football teams. It's frustrating. At least the Pussycats of UA got whipped by Iowa today.

Anyway, onto blog content. I spent a large amount of time yesterday compiling a list of radio stations in Los Angeles. I included their call letters, address, and (if listed) any job openings that I qualify or might qualify for.

I had asked my cousin who spends a lot of time in Santa Monica if he knew any radio stations in the area that I could look at, but he wasn't much help. I ended up looking at ontheradio.net. This is a very helpful site for anyone looking for work or looking to advertise on the radio. It also might be used to find radio stations when in an unfamiliar place I suppose. I searched for stations in Los Angeles and it populated a list of every FCC licensed station in Southern California. Fortunately it also lists the city the station is licensed to operate in and I won't be sending any resumes to Ontario or Beaumont. The apartment I will be living in is in Agoura Hills (about 20 min inland from Malibu).

Anyway, I found this site to be helpful, but it could stand to be updated. Some of the stations it listed are no longer operational, or they changed formats, some of them even led to the website of a station with different call letters. But all-in-all I am satisfied with the list I made. I will better be able to procure work this way.

Some of the websites I looked at listed positions for videographers! At a radio station!! Turns out they don't just take photos at remote events, they tape it and post the video to the website. I talked with one of my old superiors at Clear Channel last night about this and he said, "Yeah, it's cuz it's Los Angeles. They have them in New York too." I was blown away! I am trying to get a promotions position, and now I'm thinking perhaps I could use my finalcut skills from school to move on up into one of these video positions! How cool would that be?! I wouldn't have to operate within a TV deadline either because it's all for the website. And content for a radio station website tends to get done whenever it gets done. That would be so much fun I think! Of course I still would rather be the promotions manager, but if videographer gets me to a full-time job quicker then I will be glad to divert into that.

But now, I must get back to football, Texas Tech is down by 10 with 1:27 left in the game. I really want Texas to lose, but I don't think they will.

UPDATE: Texas won. :(

The Goal of Working after Graduating.

Copied from The Sound of Fury blog, originally posted Sep. 8, 2009:

Welcome to my update!

I have decided that this will be a blog that documents my job search! I will update from time to time, whenever I have anything new to report. My plan is to have a job to step into by January. I will be graduating from Arizona State University in December with a BA in Broadcast Journalism. I have a passion for broadcasting, not so much for journalism. But I have worked a few broadcast jobs during my time in school and I have figured out what it is I would like to do with my life.

A job that I worked here in Phoenix for a year and a half was that of a remote tech for Clear Channel Radio. I worked remote broadcasts and listener events for Mix 96.9, 550 KFYI, and Xtra Sports 910 am. Photos of me being odd can be found in the individual photo galleries. This job came to a close though, I was laid off in January of this year. It was nothing personal, they just didn't want to pay me or any of my co-workers anymore (but they still paid me a nice severance package over 6 months that I wasn't actively making them money anymore, figure that out).

Before that job I had worked as an audio op at a couple of different tv stations. I had a lot of fun running sound for live newscasts, and I thought that I might like to get back into that. Now I am back into TV news production and I realize that I don't like it as much as I liked radio promotions. Suffice to say that I currently work for a local TV station, I don't like it very much so I won't name which one.

I would love more than anything to get back into radio promotions. A friend that I worked with at Clear Channel was hired to do promotions for a Bonneville owned radio station soon after we were let go. Through her, I can see how good of a company Bonneville is to work for, not to mention I feel a bit of longing every time she is working an event. I really miss doing that. Sure the promotions/remote tech job is only part-time, but the manager position is full-time. And that is what I want to get into. Have to be a remote tech first though.

Anyway, I have tried to get hired at Bonneville here in Phoenix a few times, but have not been successful. Ultimately I will have to work for them in another market if they are the company that I want to work for, and right now they are. Bonneville doesn't operate in very many markets, but every broadcast company has operations in Los Angeles. And it is there that I would first like to make my attempts at employment. Bonneville owns one radio station in LA, and they have no TV holdings in the market. The station that I began looking at is KSWD 100.3 The Sound. It's a Classic Rock station, and coincidentally they have an opening for a Promotions Tech. Obviously I couldn't take the job now if they offered it to me, but I searched the website and found a main phone number to the station (not the studio hot-line that everyone calls to make requests). I called and asked to talk with the Promotions Manager. She was not in, she may have left for an extra long Labor Day weekend. I still haven't heard from her, but I intend to call her again tomorrow. I wish I had more to report on this employment lead, but at the moment I don't and I need to have this post up by tomorrow. I will update again after I know what she thinks of me. I will also send her a resume, including some of those embarrassing pictures from my days at Clear Channel!

Dang it! ASU lost! Now they are going to roll downhill from here, I can feel it.

ASU Football Woes and WHAT's UP WITH FSN-AZ

This was supposed to be an exciting season for ASU football. We were finally going to start winning again. And we have been doing really well! Last week we only lost to Georgia by a Field Goal in the final seconds of the game; and that was on Georgia's home field. Way better than we experienced last year at the hands of the Bulldogs. But it seems like getting a loss kind of winds us!

Now we are playing Oregon State at home, and they are beating us terribly! I can't believe this! It's almost as if we aren't trying. C'mon guys! You can't let one loss get you down. It was a good loss, and the game would have gone into OT. If we win we could have an argument for beating USC later in November. I'll admit, Oregon State is a really good team. And it's tough to admit this in light of the game currently being played, but I picked them to win the PAC-10 this year. They have really made some drastic improvements over the past couple of years, and those Rogers brothers are explosive themselves, have to keep an eye on them. But the Devils have not lost to the Beavers at Sun Devil Stadium since 1969. NO REASON TO START NOW!

Most importantly, last week the Pussycats of UA beat Oregon State. We can't have Jason getting a reason to gloat about anything. We need to beat these guys. Otherwise the Pussycats might think they have a chance to beat us again at the end of the year!

Not to mention that the game is not being televised right now. Neither was the game last week, but that was against Georgia and ESPN had bought the rights to put it on their ESPN-U channel. But seriously, are we never going to get to watch another ASU football game this season? I don't have tickets to get to the stadium with, I want to watch my Devils on TV. But FSN isn't showing the games now? What's worse is they aren't showing ANY game right now! It's some sports documentary they are airing. Stupid people.

On a related note, I'm kind of angry that Oregon running back Legarret Blount might get to come back and play again. He was suspended for the season because of unsportsmanlike conduct after he punched a Boise State player in the face for patting him on the back and saying, "Good game." He was completely unprovoked, and after he did it he bloodthirstily went after coaches and fans as well! I was ticked that he didn't lose his scholarship, but having to sit out the rest of the season and losing any chance of ever playing on Sunday kind of appeased me. But if he is allowed to come back and play, I will have to write an angry letter to the NCAA about it. Seriously, what's he going to learn if his punishment is revoked after only a couple of weeks? This is another testament to the wussification of America.

Like my Nikon Coolpix Camera!

Ok, so I got a new camera. I didn't really want to because my old one works just fine, except that I can't seem to find the battery charger for it and it's out of juice. I figured I could put off the purchase until I was able to find the battery charger (I don't take many pictures anyway), but then I needed a camera for one of my classes this semester. I bought myself a Nikon Coolpix S220. I also bought a 4 gb SD card to put in it.

Overall I am satisfied so far. It has 10 mp and a 3x optical zoom, pretty good for $150! My old camera only had 6mp, which is plenty. But 10 is that much better! I can also play with the color settings in the camera before I take the picture, saves a step in photoshop. I like it, here are a couple samples of pictures I took.

1 week of iPhone 3gS

Well, it's been a week now since I sold my soul and converted to AT&T and the iPhone. Overall, I dig it. I have too much fun with the apps and games. I like playing with the camera (it does video now), and soon AT&T will support the MMS messaging I am paying for! So I'll be able to text pictures again! There are some drawbacks, AT&T does not have the most widespread service. I can suddenly find myself in an area without any, but that doesn't happen very often. And the service is national, I only pay roaming if I leave the country! And they count canada as part of the country! So I only pay roaming if I go to Mexico or Europe! And I never go to Mexico. But I might go to Europe. I would get a prepaid phone though for that. Anyway, iPhone is truely awesome! I wouldn't waste anything on an iPod Touch, the iPhone is my all in one unit now.

Hello World!!
